Voter Identification
Voter ID
Does the name Ritzy Meckler ring a bell?
Before the days of CallerID and the "do not call" list we would be barraged by telemarketers.
In order for the parents of Ritzy to identify the origin of those pesky calls they had Ritzy's name listed in the phone book. If "Sam", with "Acme Products" called asking for Ritzy and wanted to sell her a "widget", her parents immediately knew that Sam used the local phone book to obtain her phone number. It was an original and effective strategy to dodge telemarketers.
One day, Ritzy's mother went to the mailbox, and to her surprise Ritzy had received an election card and was eligible to vote in the next election.
The only problem with this was...Ritzy was a 13 year old Springer Spaniel!
I have great respect for the dearly departed and our canine companions, I just don't think they should vote.
As a society we need identification to do any of the following:
| cash a Social Security check | drive a car | |
| obtain welfare or social services | write a check at Schnucks | |
| cash a check | open a line of credit | |
| use a credit card | open a bank account | |
| enter a bar | enter a casino | |
| fly commercially | visit a foreign country | |
| purchase age restrictive products | rent a movie at Blockbuster |
Noticeably, absent from the list above is voting.
One of our most sacred institutions in America today is the right to choose our leaders. Proven by the fact that Ritzy Meckler was registered to vote, the system is broken and needs updating.
With rampant voter and voter registration fraud in larger municipalities something must be done. I voted for HJR 48.
This bill calls for, "Upon voter approval, this proposed constitutional amendment authorizes the General Assembly to require any person seeking to vote in a public election to provide election officials a form of identification that may be prescribed by law, including a government-issued photo identification, in order to show that he or she is a United States citizen lawfully residing in this state. The State of Missouri will provide at no cost at least one form of the identification required to vote to any otherwise qualified citizen without proper identification who desires to vote."
Every eligible person has a fundamental right to vote, once. When a fraudulent vote is cast it dilutes the legitimate vote, your legitimate vote. Maybe just be a fraction of a percentage or it could change the outcome of an election. That is hard to gauge.
I will spearhead the effort to enact Voter ID legislation so the rights of your legitimate vote is protected.
It may just take a second to produce, but I can not wait for the day when an election judge says, "Can I see some ID?" We should have it at the ready; after all...we all drive to the polls.
More must be done! I hope that you will join me in these efforts!
