Property / Real Estate Taxes

Are we "renting" our property from the county in the form of property taxes? Think about it, what happens when you can not afford your rent? You get evicted.

Walking door-to-door I heard numerous horror stories and complaints about the county raising their "rent." Desperately, they asked me to come to their aid.

I obliged, and we passed a property tax reform measure that should help homeowners at a time when many face foreclosure. Some county assessors in Missouri don’t roll back property tax rates when assessments go up, as required by law. This bill will put a stop to these backdoor tax increases. This bill also includes a circuit breaker increase to provide tax relief to the neediest seniors who live in their own homes. For a senior to be evicted by a county for inability to pay the "rent" is downright wrong.

I don't think this bill goes far enough, so I sponsored HB 2573. This bill freezes residential property taxes for seniors 65 years of age or older with a total household income of up to $50,000.

HB 2573 also stipulates that once you have lived in your primary residence for at least 10 years your property taxes will be frozen for the remainder of your ownership. prior to your tenth anniversary, your annual increase can not exceed the percentage of increase in the federal Consumer Price Index (inflation).

This is an issue I campaigned on previously. We accomplished the majority of my agenda.

If we have to live within our means, why shouldn't the government?

More must be done! I hope that you will join me in these efforts!
